Bastia Umbra (Perugia) - Umbria
Il Piccolo Podere del Ceppaiolo is located in Bastia Umbra, a beautiful Umbrian town on the outskirts of Assisi. It was founded by Danilo Marcucci and Riccardo Pennaforti with the aim of producing artisanal wines in the strictest sense of the term. The two began by cultivating a tiny 0.6-hectare vineyard with just four rows of Malvasia Bianca Lunga, Trebbiano, Grechetto, Uva Pecora, San Colombano, and Verdello grapes, grown using the two-tiered Palmetta training system with double Guyot pruning, as was customary more than a century ago.
They recently leased a hectare of vineyard planted with Canaiolo, Sangiovese, Vernaccia, and Sagrantino. The vineyards, located on calcareous clay soils in a well-ventilated hillside position at an altitude of up to 400 meters, are managed without the use of any synthetic chemicals, and the harvest is manual with rigorous selection of the grapes. The vinification process does not involve the use of technologies or products foreign to the territory, but rather spontaneous fermentation with indigenous yeasts, without temperature control, filtration or the addition of sulfites at any stage. The wines of Piccolo Podere del Ceppaiolo are highly sought after because they reflect the practices and history of the Umbrian territory.
