Giovanni Iannucci
Sanframondi (Benevento) - Campania
Giovanni Iannucci makes wine in one of those parts of Italy that hardly anyone ever visits. His two hectares of vineyards are located in Guardia Sanframondi in northern Campania, in a wine region called Sannio Beneventano. Naples in the southwest and Avellino in the southeast are both 70 kilometers away, while Molise is 30 kilometers away.
For Giovanni, this remoteness has advantages and disadvantages. On the one hand, he only sells a few bottles of wine directly to tourists every now and then, but on the other hand, he naturally has his peace and quiet. He uses this to cultivate his plots organically and perhaps to reflect on what has changed in Guardia Sanframondi since his grandparents started making wine here. Probably not too much. At least if you go by the photos showing his grandparents vinifying Falanghina on the mash in cement vats. Giovanni has expanded the aging materials to include wood and steel, but his Falanghina remains on the mash; and he has no interest in additives that his grandparents didn't have either.
In addition to two different Falanghinas, Giovanni also has a Barbera di Sannio in his range, which has nothing in common with the Piedmontese grape variety of the same name.
All three wines are expressive and exciting. They have power and a balanced texture, are complex, well-structured, and long.
