Alessia and Stefano Bertaiola

Valeggio sul Mincio (Verona) - Veneto

Just west of Verona, on the hills of glacial moraine south of Lake Garda, we find Vini Sassara. This is a young project from a couple of growers with extensive experience in biodynamic cultivation and natural methods – Alessia and Stefano Bertaiola. Starting out on Stefano's family farm, they have been working together on around ten hectares of vineyards since 2007.

The area is perhaps best known for its Bardolino and Bianco di Custoza wines, but Alessia and Stefano dreamed from the beginning of going beyond the norm and seeing what their grapes and terroir could express using freer methods. For many years, the farm was called Monte dei Roari, but when they recently received stylistic support from our friend Danilo Marcucci, they chose to change the name to Sassara.

The wines form a delightful color spectrum from yellow to orange and pink to lighter red. Particularly exciting is their orange “Esotico”, which is made from virtually all the grape varieties grown in the area, a good ten or so, both green and blue. The juicy yellow “Misià” and the lighter red “Bardolino Goto” are equally charming. All that's missing is a warm sunny day and a shady parasol!
