The history of Conestabile della Staffa
Since childhood, Danilo has developed a keen ability to listen, helping his Umbrian grandfather to produce wine for personal consumption in the “old-fashioned” way: without manipulation or shortcuts. This contact with rural tradition has become the basis of his current philosophy, developed over more than 20 years of experience in viticulture and winemaking. Danilo has been involved in many wine-growing ventures, starting with the Collecapretta winery in Spoleto, followed by wineries scattered throughout Italy, and finally Conestabile della Staffa, located in Monte Melino, near Perugia, a winery with a history dating back to the 1700s. Its 12 hectares of vineyards overlook Lake Trasimeno, on clayey, humus-rich soils, located between 300 and 400 meters above sea level. The property belongs to Danilo's wife's family and was revived in 2010 under his guidance.
The philosophy of Conestabile della Staffa
The first vintage was produced in 2012, launching a project that combines tradition, sustainability, and a deep connection with the territory. The Conestabile della Staffa family boasts a long agricultural tradition. Over the centuries, the estate functioned as a self-sufficient center, but like many historical realities, it suffered a decline in production over time. Danilo Marcucci marked a turning point, reviving this heritage and transforming it into an example for the ‘real wine’ movement. After a hiatus in the 1950s, the winery resumed production thanks to a return to authentic viticulture, combining traditional practices with an innovative philosophy.
Conestabile della Staffa, barrels in the historic cellarMarcucci does not stop at Conestabile della Staffa alone: his consulting work extends to about 15 micro-realities, where knowledge, techniques, and experiences are shared, creating a unique collaborative network. “My wine is not a natural wine, but a ‘serious’ wine,” says Danilo. For him, wine production is not just about the label or the technique, but above all about a deep understanding of the land and its potential. “The land has incredible value and it takes time to store and investigate what each place can give back in its transformation,” he adds. Marcucci aims for a wine that is an authentic reflection of the territory, without compromise or artificial intervention. At Conestabile della Staffa, production is based on the principles of “farmer's wine,” a healthy and conscious wine, obtained using only what nature offers.
