Fortunago (Pavia) - Lombardy

The Castle of Stefanago, which surprisingly brings to mind everything we have read about the violent passions and refined cruelties that make medieval Italy dark and fascinating, still has a beating heart, with activities projected into the future in a successful attempt to perpetuate history and the vocation for the drink of Bacchus.

Castello di Stefanago is now a family-run winery, where generations of experience and passion for the land have shaped the approach to winemaking. From the vineyards, which thrive in ideal soil and sun exposure conditions, cultivated using organic and low-intervention practices, the Baruffaldi family produces wines that authentically express the time, terroir, and tradition.

The work in the cellar is also based on an understanding of each vintage, accompanying the grapes to bring out the best expression of that year, always favoring the connection with nature, combined with careful observation that makes each vintage unique.

Ancestral sparkling wines, still wines of great elegance and balance, together with the Stüvenagh collection of young, bold, and eccentric wines, which includes pét-nat, PIWI, ancestral, and orange wines, are the stylistic hallmark of a way of understanding wine and nature as a whole.

For several years now, Stefanago Castle has hosted Natural Wines Oltrepo & Friends in May, an event that, born from an idea by Jacopo Baruffaldi, brings together natural, artisanal, and biodynamic producers from Oltrepo Pavese and their “friends” from all over Italy.
