Piombaia Winery: Winegrowing with respect for biodiversity
The winemakers at the Piombaia Winery in Montalcino, southern Tuscany, are proud to offer their customers sustainably produced, natural wines with excellent taste. The wines owe their outstanding quality to biodynamic cultivation, which has been practiced at the Piombaia Winery since 2008.
The Piombaia Winery is jointly owned by the Rossi family from Montalcino and the Cantini family from Pisa. The fifth generation of the family, siblings Vittorio, Francesco, and Cecilia, now run the family business. When they switched to biodynamic viticulture in 2008, they were guided by their respect for biodiversity. Since then, synthetic fertilizers, chemical pesticides, and large agricultural machinery have been banned from the estate. The vineyard is cultivated using only natural resources. The quality of the wines reflects the winery's approach of working in harmony with natural cycles.
Instead of tractors, horses are used between the vines to curb weed growth with their hooves. The winegrowers use compost for natural fertilization, which is composed exclusively of organic material from the vineyard. Green manure, crop rotation, and the absence of chemicals produce healthy vines whose fruits are characterized by an unsurpassed taste. The grapes are harvested entirely by hand. In the cellar, the wines are produced through spontaneous fermentation without the addition of yeast or sulfites. The wines are aged in wooden barrels until they have developed their full flavor potential.
The Piombaia winery's vineyards are home to Sangiovese Grosso, Merlot, and Fiano grape varieties. An area of eight hectares at an altitude of 450 meters above sea level is reserved for the cultivation of Sangiovese and Merlot grapes on sandy-loamy soils. The second vineyard on the southeast side of the estate is characterized by stony marl soils on sloping terrain. It covers four hectares and is located at an altitude of only 80 meters. The red wines are characterized by an intense color and a strong flavor and go well with red meat and poultry.
